A sound and visual performance by American sound artist, Stephen Vitiello, joined by Adrian Gebruers Carillonneur and Organist of Cobh’s St Colman’s Cathedral.

From Another Room is a multi-media mix of experimental sound and video, featuring electric guitar, field recordings generated in and around Cobh (including those from unique acoustic locations in the Cathedral) with as church organ and carillon.

Stephen Vitiello is an electronic musician and media artist. His sound installations have been presented internationally. Vitiello’s audio recordings of the World Trade Center have been included in numerous exhibitions as written about in publications by Paul Virilio, Arthur Danto and David Toop. In August, his installation, A Bell For Every Minute will be installed in New York’s Museum of Modern Art as part of the exhibition, Soundings: A Contemporary Score. Vitiello has collaborated with such artists and musicians as Nam June Paik, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Roden, Taylor Deupree, Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Irish sound and visual arts collective, Strange Attractor.

CRUEL AND UNUSUAL

Cruel and Unusual showcases the works of eleven female photographers brought together by curators, Hester Keijser and Pete Brook exhibiting a collection of revealing, and quite unexpected photography illustrating life behind bars.

Photographers included in the exhibition include: Alyse Emdur, Amy Elkins, Araminta de Clermont, Brenda Ann Kenneally, Christiane Feser, Jane Lindsay, Natalie Mohadjer, Deborah Luster, Lizzie Sadin, Yana Payusova and Lori Waselchuk

This exhibition will run from 13 June – 7 July, with a special reception for the exhibition on Saturday 22 of June at 2pm with Hester Keijser, one of the curators of the exhibition.

Cruel and Unusual looks at how the prison system is presented in images and how these images are created, distributed and consumed. The modern prison system is a popular cause for social debate and especially in recent times due to more and more reports of shocking conditions and overcrowding.

A FREE Artist’s talk will take place at the Crawford Art Gallery on Thursday 18 April at 5:30pm in the lecture theatre in Cork – All welcome!

Alluding to the act of recollection ‘Anamnesis’ explores ideas surrounding the use of amulets as an object to commemorate infant loss.  Through this work the individual’s memory is re-imagined as a collective cultural memorial.

This exhibition is part of a national, multi-site participatory arts project – The Amulet – initiated and led by West Cork based artist, Marie Brett, as a community collaborative initiative, focusing on the subject of pregnancy and infant loss, giving voice to a sensitive and difficult life experience, the exhibition is accompanied by a publication including six commissioned essays.
Special thanks are extended to participating bereaved family members who collaborated with the artist.

This project is made possible with the support of the Arts Council, Cork County Council, the HSE, Cork University Hospital, Bally Phehane/Togher Arts & Craft Initiative, Waterford Regional Hospital,St. Munchins Maternity Hospital and CREATE.

Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music. His unique sound, his mastery of his chosen instrument – the violin – his acknowledgement of the past and his shaping of the future of the music, combine to create an astonishing and formidable artistic intelligence.

Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, a native of Chicago born to parents from the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. He studied at the city’s prestigious Music College before becoming an active member of the local music scene. Cahill’s spare, essential accompaniment to Martin Hayes’ fiddle is acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition

Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill met in Chicago in the 1980s. They formed the jazz/rock/fusion band, Midnight Court, which allowed them to experiment with a variety of new music styles. When Martin reclaimed his traditional roots, reinvigorated, and after recording two solo albums, he began a new musical relationship with Cahill, beginning with the lyrical music of East Clare.

This is one tremendous night of music you won’t want to miss!

Sirius Arts Centre has been running its Artist in Residence programme for over a 20 years. The programme receives funding from the Arts Council and Cork County Council and is recognised internationally. Residents live in a basement apartment in the Sirius Arts Centre’s building, located in the centre of Cobh, 20 minutes by train from Cork City.

Sirius is also internationally known for their exemplary exhibition programme which runs year round in our two gallery spaces on the first floor of the building.
